I have a habit of being late for my Thursday class, anyhow every thursday i find myself rushing to the subway and spending the whole subway trip thinking about which route i should take (because my classroom is in the middle of all the different routes) to get me there in the shortest time. I usually end up taking carleton 506 streetcar.
If you ever take that streetcar, you'd know that 506 is the most annoying streetcar on earth. When you are waiting for it, it never comes, and the one coming from the other way would come in dozens, and so there's usually almost 50 people chunked together waiting for the ONE streetcar that shows up every 20 minutes when it's suppose to be frequent service. Anyway enough with the complaining. That day was raining and once i stepped out of the subway station, i saw SOO many people waiting, i waited annoyingly for like 10 minutes (by this time i only had like 2 minutes left till class), when the streetcar came, EVERBODY was flooding towards the door. The streetcar was SOOO packed, we packed in the thing like sardine in a can
I managed to weave through the crowd smoothly, but when i was in there, i was so squished i was pretty much supporting myself by leaning diagonally and holding on to the metal handles, standing up. In front of me sat this old lady who had super thick glasses, around her 70s, she was really really big, and with a semi-angry tone, yelling at this girl that was sitting next to her. She said something like this
"You should be ashamed of yourself, sitting down on the seat, HOW OLD ARE YOU? Look at the sign up there, it says this seat should be reserved for people who NEED to sit down, why don't you just GET off of your seat right now? GET OFF!
...meaningwhile, the girl wasn't looking, she had earphones on and wouldn't look at the woman
EVERYBODY was trying to take a look at this spectacle
I was thinking, yeah that's true, the girl should kind of give up her seat for ppl who need to sit, but the car was so packed it's even more annoying if you moved, the women just kept yelling at her incessantely, she really NEVER stopped lecturing her throughout the five minute ride.
"Why aren't you looking at me? hey LOOK AT ME. You are an embarassment, GET OFF THE CHAIR RIGHT NOW, you should be ashamed of yourself.
...at this point, i was getting a bit annoyed of the woman, CLEARLY she can't move, and clearly she was just a grumpy old lady, everybody in the streetcar was young and the only senior person standing nearby said she didn't want to sit.
Then at Queen's Park stop, she pulled the bell, stood up, then as she was trying to squeeze her way out, she yelled at the people in front of her, "EXCUSE ME you're IN MY WAY, MOVE AWAY i'm trying to get through"
I was thinking, "omg she's really mean"
Everybody was pretty much angry at the woman because she was clearly very bitter and it wasn't even about the seat, this other lady yelled out 3 rows behind, "hey lady, if you feel it's uncomfortable, why don't you take the wheel-trans? stop insulting the girl" (wow, i love people who would stand up for other people)
The old woman was still trying to get through the tightly packed streetcar, when she heard that woman said that, she was really angry, but ignored the comment, turned back to the young girl and said,
"I hope you beleive in karma, you dirty skank"
*gasp*
when the women left, the girl looked a bit relieved and quietly voiced out her complaints, she said, "she just said that because i'm black"
My whole body felt cold, i got shivers, and my eyes welled up...i just felt so bad for the girl, and to have someone say that about you in front of so many people, it is so terrible. Sometimes i really don't understand how mean people can be.
